ISTA Senior Science Quiz

During Science Week each year the ISTA (Irish Science Teachers Association) hold a table quiz for sixth year science pupils at Trinity College Dublin.  This year The High School entered two teams. With 70 teams competing in the Dublin venue and only 10 progressing to the National Final it was going to be a very close competition.  The students were quizzed on Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as some topical Science questions.  In the end the teams narrowly missed out on the Final coming 11th and 15th.  This is a fantastic achievement and congratulations to the two teams.

International Olympiad Korea

Dylan Walsh, Form 4, came third in the recent IrJSO National Olympiad at DCU and was awarded a gold medal. He was selected along with five other students to represent Ireland in the International Junior Science Olympiad in Daegu, Korea on in December. Well done Dylan.

An Evening of Music and Light - The High School Carol Service

On Monday 7 December, we gathered in the picturesque surroundings of Zion Church,to participate in the annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The High School orchestra and choir led the music, while Dr David Adams played the ancient organ and we took it in turns to sing along and listen as carol after carol filled the beautiful, Victorian church, just a stone's throw from our own school gate. Of special note during the evening was a beautiful rendition of  'O Holy Night', which resounded to the rooftop and was as sublime as it was moving.  Each reader, singer, musician and usher was well-practised and the entire evening ran like clockwork, owing much to the tireless dedication of Mrs Hutchinson Edgar, Ms Bourke and Ms Rothwell. But the most memorable moment of all came when the lights dimmed and the old church momentarily dipped into darkness, but for the ripple of candlelight that flowed up the church, as candles touched together, and The High School choir sang 'Jesus Christ The Apple Tree'. And as we chatted with friends old and new and began to make our way back to The Reynolds Hall with its waiting festive fair, the orchestra burst into a lively rendition of 'Sleigh Ride', and it suddenly felt like Christmas was in the air.

Green Schools News

Advancing on last year’s success on obtaining our Energy flag, we are moving onto this year’s theme of Water, while we continue to progress in our work in Litter & Waste and Energy. Students from across the year groups meet bimonthly to discuss current issues and work to pursue our next goals.
Good work has been done by our members in management liaison, publicity and other areas. A group has conducted a survey of water use, locations (taps, toilets, etc.), and possibilities for improvements.
The school’s water meter has been checked weekly to calculate our water usage. A questionnaire has
been put together, which will be released to all students and staff. Our upcoming results will soon be
available on the Green Schools noticeboard. Next term, we are looking forward to holding a Water Awareness week, and also, a school-wide poster competition.  Have any ideas, suggestions, or recommendations for us? The Green Schools committee meets every second Thursday morning in A22. The next Green Schools meeting is on Thursday 21 January at 8.30am.  See the updated noticeboard, or contact Green Schools members or Mr. Barry for more information.

Tip of the Week: Try having a quick shower instead of a bath this week, it can save dozens of litres!

A French Christmas Market at The High School Dublin

On 8 December, Form 4 French pupils held a Festive French Christmas Market at The High School. With rows of stalls, balloons and tinsel, the Reynolds Hall was transformed into a Winter Wonderland. We set up our stalls of food, drinks, sweets and games to sell at Junior and Senior breaks. It was difficult to tell if the milkshakes, pizzas or pancakes were
most popular.  Pupils were certainly spoilt for choice. Some people set up arcade games and people played to win sweets or guessed how many sweets were in a jar.   All of the buying and selling was done through French and the stalls
and food were French-themed. We raised over €400 which is going to Focus Ireland. Thank you to our French teachers, Ms Roulett, Mrs Ennis and Ms Lally, who made it all possible.  It was such a success, we hope that we have begun a new tradition which will continue next year; we are looking forward to it already. Joyeux Noël!

Christmas Dinner Date

Christmas dinner will be available in the canteen this year on Thursday 10 December.  Pupils need to pre-order and pay at first break any day except Wednesdays. Price is €6 including mince pie for dessert.  They are available to all students but limited in number so first come, first served.  Christmas wraps are also on the menu at the deli counter again this year, starting on 1 December, with turkey, ham, stuffing and cranberry sauce.  A big thank you to Catering Manager, Chris McNeilly and the canteen staff who cook well over 40,000 sausages and over 23,000 hot meals for us each year, not including deli, pizzas or goujon rolls!

Scouting for a Christmas Tree?

It certainly feels like the festive season when Christmas  trees go on sale at the War Memorial Hall in Terenure.  Many of our current and past pupils are involved with the 31st Rathfarnham Scouting Troop, so please support this their biggest, and most important, annual fundraising  event.

Concern Breakfast Feast

From 26 to 27 November, pupils took part in the Concern 24 Hour Fast organised by 3RN. In total 80 pupils took part in the fast. The money raised (over €1,600 so far) will go towards helping people in developing countries. The next day the cafeteria staff kindly made a delicious breakfast for those who took part in the fast. We had pancakes, croissants, cereal and hot chocolate. It was a great way to finish off the fast.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

Christmas is coming and all around the school teachers and pupils are preparing for the big day, nowhere more so that the Home Economics Department, where, under the guiding hands of Ms Bergin and Ms Garnett, making everything from Christmas cookies, to chocolate logs, is the order of the day.  The pupils even get to try their hand at wrapping their handmade gifts.  Lucky things!

Generosity and Kindness at Christmastime

December is a busy month for High School pupils, who undertake various activities and challenges to raise money for worthy charities, like The Simon Community, Team Hope, Christian Aid, Concern and Focus Ireland, amongst others.  As part of 3RL's CSPE action project they raised money by raffling an Irish jersey signed by Paul O'Connell, raising over €450. Focus Ireland came to the school  to  talk to all Form 3 pupils on homelessness in Dublin, and pupils presented Focus  Ireland with the fundraising cheque.

Pupils have also been out and about singing carols and raising money for The Simon Community and Christian Aid.  A diverse group of pupils and teachers gathered together to sing and share the spirit of Christmas among the shoppers at Dundrum.   Next week, Form 4 will undertake their annual  Helen Kane Memorial Christmas Challenge, for St Luke's Hospital and Barnardo's Children's Charity.  We wish them all the best with that.
Thank you to everyone who has helped raise  money for charity, by taking part, or by giving financial support.

Blood Brothers at The High School Dublin

From 19 to 21 November, Form 5 preformed the award-winning play, Blood Brothers at The High School. The play was an overwhelming success and everyone enjoyed it. Every night was packed-out and the crowds gave us a great reception. The play had been organised over the last few months by the pupils from Form 5 and nurtured under the watchful eye of Ms Browne, Mr Milofsky and Ms Lyons. Blood Brothers, written by Willy Russell, and revolves around the story of twins Mickey and Eddie who were separated at birth. This production was tackled head-on by a talented cast of actors and fine directors who took to the play with great enthusiasm. The set design was spearheaded by a team of talented pupils who made sure that Blood Brothers was a sight to behold. The Hair and Make-up Department made sure we all looked presentable on stage. The Chair Committee made sure everyone was comfortable and also served refreshments. The people in charge of sound, the ticket sellers and the stage hands were all crucial to the performances' success. Praise is also due to the four stage managers, Sophie Haynes, Emma Taylor, Ellen Galvin and Joe Prendergast, who made sure that everything worked properly and ran smoothly. We also have to commend the Communications Directors, Musa, Tim and Dylan for their hard work and to thank our sponsors. Finally, we must give our thanks to the heads of security David Donnelly and Ronan O’Byrne and all those who played their part in the play's success. Naoise Law (5GF)

The High School vs Wesley TY Semi-Final

Photo Gallery by QuickGallery.com

The High School TY team beat Wesley 23–17 on Saturday morning in the semi-final of the TY league. The conditions were harsh . High School dominated the game from the very start with hooker Kyle Butler stealing possession from The High School’s first kick-off, setting the tone for the rest of the game. A great team effort led to a try from Loris Nikolov, giving The High School an early lead. The High School continued to take control with Eddie Meredith scoring a penalty to bring the score to 8-0. Great patience and precision was shown by the High School side, leading to two more tries; the first from Matthew Barlow after a quick pass from scrumhalf Stephen Landy, the second from full back Jamie Ukagba with a clinical finish to a well-rehearsed play.

The score going in at half-time was 18-5.  A great turnover and quick thinking from The High School side led to Dylan Walsh making a break and assisting Eddie Meredith for a try. Unfortunately, The High School then lost Eddie Meredith to injury. Wesley then upped their intensity, putting The High School on the back foot. Organised defence from The High School opposed Wesley enough to finish the match 23-17. The TY team is now preparing for the league final against St Andrews in Donnybrook stadium.

High School Pupil Makes International Youth Climbing Team

Bouldering is rock climbing without ropes (using crash pads).  Lead climbing is roped rock climbing were you clip the rope attached to your harness into carabiners as you climb up.  In both disciplines you are scored on how high you climb up the problem (bouldering) or route (lead).

Tommy Myles, a Form 2 pupil at The High School came third in the Youth Climbing Series All Ireland Final 2015 and represented Ireland in the Grand Final of the competition in Ratho, Scotland last April.

He is currently on the Irish Youth Climbing team and compete in both national and international competitions. He climbs at least four times a week for about two hours in Gravity climbing centre and Awesome Walls in Dublin.  Tommy loves climbing outdoors and goes trad climbing in Dalkey and Glendalough as well as bouldering in Glendo.

This Summer he went bouldering in Fontainebleau, France with my climbing club and he's going to El Chorro in Spain this Christmas.  Good luck Tommy!

1st Years v Kings Hospital Away

1st Years v Kings Hospital Away - 1 win and 1 loss (Wednesday 14th) The first years had a great trip away to Kings Hospital .
We arrived early and the girls got s tour around the grounds and school, the special highlight seeing the swimming pool. Some of the girls were playing with the Minor As so we didn't have our 2 full strength squads out. One group set about playing with structure, style and composure - even with a player down. They came out on top in the 2 halves. Unfortunately the other group came up against a very squad King's Hospital team that were able to play the ball around us. We improved as the game went on by using our skills to defeat the opponents and got some goals back. It wasn't our day but it was a fun day out in King's Hospital.

Remembrance Week 2015 at The High School Dublin

At the unveiling of The High School Great War Memorial window, on the third anniversary of the Armistice, 11th November 1923, all those gathered there made a promise that The High School past pupils who died in that war, should always be remembered by successive generations of pupils.  This Remembrance Week, as we remember those who fought and died in conflicts around the world, we remember one soldier in particular.  Harold Thorne Speares was a High School past pupil who, we have just discovered, died in The Great War.  For some unknown reason, his name was not recorded on the High School Great War Memorial.  We were contacted by a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society, last week, who purchased Harold's Next of Kin Memorial Plaque at an antique fare and did some research on the soldier it commemorated. Luckyily for us, the researcher, Mr Gary Whitley, found our HSD War Stories website and got in touch.

Harold was only 20 years old only when he died in 1917, during the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), a native of Rathdrum, County Wicklow.  He has no known grave, nor, as stated previously, is he commemorated on The High School Great War Memorial.  We will now rectify this situation and Harold's name will be added to our records and a plaque bearing his name will be placed at our school Great War Memorial. He is forgotten no more.

Congratulations to all pupils and past pupils who received prizes and awards at the annual Parents' Evening and Prize Distribution; many thanks to all who were involved in preparing and running this successful event.  Our guest, Rory Montgomery, Second Secretary-General, Department of The Taoiseach, spoke about his own links with The High School and how being a past pupil of the school had an important impact on his life, especially his time as Ambassador to France.  The evening was filled with music and discussion, celebrating the talents and endeavours of current and past pupils, in the areas of academia and sport; and praised those who have made a helpful contribution to school life, for debating, for organising events,  and for completing the Gaisce-President's Award, amongst other things.  A wonderful evening was had by all.

IMTA Excellence Award for HSD Pupil

Congratulations to recent past pupil Séamus  MacLochlainn who is to receive an award from the Irish Mathematics Teachers’ Association following his outstanding performance in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate at The High School in 2015.
Ernest Glorney WWI Pilot

Séamus also was awarded the Glorney Exhibition and Cup at the recent HSD Prize Distribution Evening.   The Glorney Cup was originally presented to the school by the Glorney family, whose son, Ernest, a pilot in WWI, died when his plane crashed over England while returning to France.
Lieutenant Ernest Edward Glorney's family named an educational foundation in his memory: The Ernest Edward Glorney Scholarship in Earth Science & Engineering, which is still funding research today. But in The High School, we remember Glorney each year, when the prestigious cup is presented to  an especially high achieving pupil.  A prize richly deserved Séamus!

Senior XV League Semi-Final

The Senior XV were hosted by Wilson's Hospital School in the semi-final of the league campaign. There was a big build-up to the occasion, but no signs of nerves were shown by either side.

The High School took the lead early on with a superb try by David James Donnelly. But, only minutes later, Wilson's put a try on the board. Some controversial penalties by the referee gave Wilson's a larger lead further into the first half.

Louis Huggard gave The High School another try just before half time, making it 16-12. Not long into the second half The High School team achieved a well worked team try, scored by David James Donnelly. But, yet again, Wilson's responded with two consecutive tries. With 6 minutes to go, The High School scored another fine fashioned try finished by Matthew Barlow.

Unfortunately, The High School couldn't retain the ball in the dying minutes, the final whistle blew and the match finished 28-24. A superb performance matched with an unjust result. Tries scored by; David James Donnelly (2), Louis Huggard and Matthew Barlow.

Man of the match was David James Donnelly.

Classics Theatre Trip

On Tuesday the 20 October, a group of Sixth and Fifth Year classicists assembled in the foyer of the Abbey Theatre to see a production of Sophocles’ play Oedipus. There was excitement in the air asmost of us had already studied the play and, were interested to see director Wayne Jordan’s take on the classic tragedy. The drama has been highly influential in many aspects of modern literature and psychology, such as Freud’s “Oedipus complex”, and was a fascinating text to have studied.  Jordan’s adaptation was hugely successful in capturing the true essence of the play, but like all good productions, elements of it divided opinions within our class (like the singing chorus!) The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and we would like to thank Mr. Milofsky and Ms. Browne for organising the outing.

The High School at The Royal Russell School London MUN

Royal Russell School London MUN Coming off the back of a hugely successful Terenure Model Untied Nations Conference, the High School delegates were ready for an even greater challenge; debating, internationally at the esteemed Royal Russell Model United Nations conference in London. The delegates enjoyed some fine food, particularly a barbeque on the second night, along with breakfast every morning in the Premier Inn.

This paired with fun activities such as the discos every night and the X Factor competition ensured that a truly memorable and great time was had by all. However it was during the conference committees themselves that the delegates really shone.

Every delegate of The High School showed off their impressive debating skills, with the school eventually coming away with a distinguished delegate award, in reward for the hard work put in by everybody on the trip.

Gaeltacht Trip October 2015

A group of 6th Form pupils and teachers recently hopped on the school mini buses and travelled to Coláiste Uisce in Mayo to spend a weekend practising oral Irish.   We arrived on Friday evening and were split into 4 teams for the weekend.  Over the course of the weekend we took part in body boarding, pier jumping, raft building, bench ball, archery, climbing and more.  We even had a céilí on our last night!  A great weekend was had by everyone practising Irish and taking part in fun activities. We’d like to thank our Irish teachers, Mr. Flynn and Ms. Quinn for organising the trip and giving up their time to bring us. We’d also like to send a special word of thanks to Mr. Rankin who drove us there and even though he is not an Irish teacher, made a great effort to speak Irish all weekend.  As they say “taithí a dhéanann máistreacht”.

HSD's Boys' Hockey Team at the All Ireland's Tournament 2015

Just before midterm, the Senior Boys’ hockey team headed off to Belfast to play at the All Irelands. They played four matches: they won one, drew two and lost one. The boys managed a draw against Bandon Grammar School (who got to the semi-finals), thanks to their captain Conor Empey who slotted two last minute goals into the top right hand corner.
A big thanks too to the coaches and members of staff who helped the team prepare and also to all the supporters, including dedicated parents, who travelled all the way up to Belfast to cheer the team on.  Here's to a return next year!

HSD Victory: SCT vs De La Salle League Quarter-Final

Superb play from the Senior Cup Team today at The High School.  The team faced De La Salle on their home ground in Rathgar, in front of a crowd of eager supporters.
The High School took an early lead against their rivals and despite De La Salle's resurgence in the middle of the game, there was never any doubt that High School would win the day.
After half time, De La Salle came out fighting and it took all of The High School's determination to hold them back.  The insistent, rally-cry of Ronan O'Byrne reminded the lads what was at stake and the tide began to turn in The High School's favour.
As tempers began to flair, and the tries began to mount for The High School, both sides pushed themselves to the limit, but undoubtedly, the High School proved themselves to be the better team, dominating at the end of the second half and ultimately the game.
Final score, 28-10 to The High School, giving them a well-deserved place in the League semi-final.
